Finca El Porvenir - Pink Bourbon

This is a very special farm-direct coffee from producer Lucido Diaz that we picked up though our friends at Arango Specialty Coffee. Brian had a chance to meet Lucido and visit El Porvenir while in Colombia last year.
Lucido has a small farm in La Union, Narino, Colombia, just down the road from our long-time coffee partners at Finca La Capilla. In 2019, Lucido decided to completely replant his farm with 3,000 trees of the varietal Pink Bourbon (along with some other super tasty specialty varietals). This risky undertaking left him without any coffee production for three years while the new trees grew. with the first harvest coming in 2022. Not only did the coffee taste great, but Lucido said that pink bourbon is holding better than the previous varietals regarding climate change and new disease that are affecting the coffee trees.
More about the varietal: Pink Bourbons are very difficult to produce with consistency. The recessive genes leading to the expression of these colors are easily thwarted by the presence of yellow and red genes in a given pollen grain. A carefully isolated and contained lot can do quite well and preserve the unique color and character of this variety, though such lots are quite hard to find. Pink Bourbon has a substantial amount of glucose which has been thought to help give the coffee its more delicate, soft and complex profile.
